A thing about “The Safety Pin”:

An identifying marker like that is not symbolic. An identifying marker like that is to say to people who are regularly in REAL danger “I am safe. I will help you.”

This is not a small thing you are undertaking. If you pin one on yourself, and a guy is harassing me in a bathroom, I am going to turn to you for back up. Please get yourself in a mental place for that possibility, this is not an abstract mark of solidarity. If you can’t do that, that’s ok, but then don’t wear the pin because I’ll suddenly be turning to someone who can’t help me.

If you have never been in physical danger for living your life, understand that a lot of people have been. Get your head around the reality that they are now going to expect you to step up, they’ll be relying on you as a safety net. You are now in danger by association. That is brave and beautiful and I hope what you intend. Don’t mistake this thing for a symbol, it is not. It is a weapon you have drawn against the status quo.

I have a scar on the back of my head from ten stitches and general weather ache in my ribs and lower back because I’m queer and trans and I’ve been beaten for that. If you want to stand in solidarity with me and mine….know what you are getting in to. Be mentally prepared for that.

Let’s remember, Jesus was a Jewish man of color, born homeless to an unwed teenager, who spent his formative years as an illegal immigrant before returning to his home country to hang out with twelve men, prostitutes, and socially untouchable tax collectors while he taught a radical social doctrine of equality, love, and forgiveness that included paying taxes, free healthcare, and the sharing of resources within a community.

#CANON JESUS IS SIX MILLION TIMES BETTER THAN FANON JESUS

Canon Jesus

It’s remarkable and heartbreaking how many Christians selectively forget all of this.

I grew up attending a United Church which has always been seen as liberal, because they allow LGBTQIA ministers. I stopped attending services regularly after I graduated high-school, when I realized I didn’t believe in God and had a chance to learn more about philosophy, astronomy, and different belief systems. Despite my alignment with Humanism and reductive materialism, I still attend services occasionally and these historical facts about Jesus are partially why. A lot of the sermons are simply about helping people, loving and supporting those who are marginalized and oppressed, and living a life that goes beyond material possessions and superficiality. Not about some mystical supernatural all powerful all knowing being who created, judges, rewards and punishes all life.
My Parents are fairly heavily involved with the church, my Mom teaches Sunday School and she’s in the choir, my Dad runs the sound booth during the sermons, they both contribute a significant amount of money and are involved in the Church’s financial management committees, they were heavily involved in the minister selection processes, and they are seemingly always attending some kind of church related fundraiser/event - bizarres, luncheons, soup kitchen, bake sales. My Mom was the one who taught me about Jesus as a radical. The United Church has heavily influenced my life and their lives. They also have a daughter (me) who has struggled heavily with addiction, who has hopes of becoming a Street Nurse and has been vocal about helping people who are marginalized and oppressed.
So it has always puzzled me that I ended up with such a different belief system and opposing political alignment. It has always seemed so contradictory to me for so many Christians, including my Parents, to be conservatively aligned politically and socially. It has been heartbreaking for me to have argued with my Dad about same sex marriage, to hear both of my parents using language that dehumanizes homeless people, to know they hold ableist beliefs about the ability for marginalized and oppressed people to radically change their lives, to have them disagree with all forms of harm reduction strategies, and to hear my Dad’s upset over the increased government funding and availability of naloxone kits.
I strongly believe if Jesus was alive today he’d be a proud trans activist, hanging out with homeless people, walking in every pride parade, officiating all the same sex marriages. He’d be at Insite in the downtown East Side advocating for compassionate care and support for those struggling with mental health and addiction.
